Rome's Crazy Birds

So, since the end of October we have been noticing these crazy flocks of birds that come out EVERY night just before sunset. I've never seen anything like it before. If you watch them long enough the synchronizing patterns they make are incredible.

No one knows exactly why they are here, and why there are so many, not even the Romans. It's now December, they are still here, and come out every evening. The best is when you see someone rush across the Lungotevere with a newspaper over their head worried they'll be surprised with a little present from above.

NORTH. Venice

Oct.24.11
Our last morning in Venice. One of the most spectacular cities I have visited. We woke up bright and early at 6am to make the most of the time we had left. We had breakfast and watched the sun rise from the roof of the hotel, and we were on our way. It really is the best way to see any 'touristy' city. When everyone is still asleep and the city is peacefull once again, with only the local vendors opening up shop for the day that would follow, and locals running some morning errands. That is what's at the heart of every city. We stumbled across Campo S. Maria Formosa and took advantage of the time to record a sketch in our sketchbooks.

Venice. I will be back agian...

Time for some architecture appreciation. A short stop on the way to our next destination. This is what happens on a trip with 60 architecture students and professors, and this is why most of us have more pictures of buildings than we do of people :-P

NORTH. Urbino

So, I realize that I am VERY behind on these posts. Its been a while since getting back to Rome at the end of October, and we've moved straight into studio mode. So here we go again, with the rest of the North Trip!

Day 3: Oct.18.11 Urbino.
A small university town filled with students. It was great to see, and it reminded me of how Cambridge could, and should be like, maybe in the near future, with a higher population of students to accompany the school of architecture and an improved downtown core. It could turn into something great :)

While in Urbino, we stayed at the student residence, but, sadly we had just missed the Nutella Party!

Tuscan Countryside

After our short stop in Pienza, we headed off to the next town, where the bus travelled the winding roads on the mountain side to reach the hill town of Gubbio, our next stop. It made for a very nauseous bus ride, but the views are spectacular!

The first stop of the north trip, the small town of Pienza, so small that you are able to walk the perimeter of the city walls in under ten minutes.
With breathtaking views of the tunscan countryside, and a taste of the local specialty pecorino cheese.

So, it is Thanksgiving, a time to be thankful and a time spent with family and friends. With many helping hands and 6 turkeys prepared, it is time for one of the greatest feasts I think I have ever witnessed come together in less than 24 hours.

So, we are back in Rome from our trip to the south! And I can already say that this trip will defintely be a lasting memory of this four month term. With limited internet access and the overwhelming number of pictures I've come back with, its time for some much needed updates!

Lunch Menu:
Glad to find other options other than pizza, pasta and paninis.

Located on via di San Francesco in Trastevere, this place does mediterranean-style cooking right!
Sold by every 100g, its affordable, delicious, and my kind of eating

Grilled eggplants, zuccinis, fennel, calamari/seafood stew, bean & ancient grain salad with arugala, and much more...even burgers and fries if you really wanted to :)

Campo di Fiori Market

Its Friday! The beginning of our four day weekends, and what better way to kick it off then fresh morning markets, and heading to Sperlonga for the day. All before studio gets crazy, with our first deadline coming up on Wednesday.

Todays purchases: fresh white-flesh peaches, pears, and some delicious pestos (basillico and red pepper).

Heading to Porta Portese on Sunday to check out one of Rome's biggest flea markets. Getting ready for some unique finds, and maybe some vintage prints if I'm lucky!

Sperlonga was beautiful, yet again. Being a weekday the beach wasn't as busy. The water was clear and unpopulated, which meant a lot of little fish nibbling at our feet! Not very pleasant at times, but I guess we are the ones invading their territory. We passed a frisbee around, layed in the sun, and started some course readings (the best way to do readings by the way! We need a beach back in Cambridge! That way, I may have actaully finished all my readings :)

Sperlonga

Time for a weekend getaway!
We've been in Roma for almost two weeks now, and things are settling in nicely (including the fact that my computer is now fixed!) This weekend we ventured out to Sperlonga...and I think it can easily be said that this will be a frequent weekend occurance :) Aside from the hour train ride, and packing into the last bus tighter than sardines, the beauty of Sperlonga's beach makes it all worth it. Going back again on Friday!

Probably my favourite of the three. There was an indescribable calmness to this collection; both in the way in which the sculptures were placed and in the dramatic spaces they were contained in.

The Pantheon

So, here it is, the one, the only, Pantheon.

After spending the morning at the Crypta Baldi Museum, we headed out to visit this iconic building. Please enjoy these contiuous shots, capturing the animation of the piazza (my personal favourite is the little girl struggling with the map at the very end).

We sat on the steps of the fountain, where I began the first sketch in my sketchbook, one of many over the next four months. Can't wait to see the city in the winter, once all the tourists have gone.
And, of course, after all of that, a breif gelato break!

Roma!! Really!?

We found it! It's our first day in Rome, our flights coming in periodically throughout the day. A number of us met up in the airport, which was nice after our 8 months away on co-op. We arrived at our apartment, and decided to go explore around the neighbourhood.

Seen above: Waterloo in Rome, the lecture room, & Piazza di Santa Maria outside our door.

It's here it's happening and it still hasn't hit. Are we really here?! It seems like some sort of crazy dream you only see in the movies...it could also be the 'jetlag haze' as we are now referring to it. These where the topics of dicussion over dinner for the number of us that had arrived in Rome earlier today. Our first dinner in Rome, of course, a selection of pizzas to share and eggplant roll appitizers, while sitting on tables spilling out onto the streets.

Seen above: views from our apartment, one of three bedrooms and the kitchen
